Ireland Outdoor Recreation

Camping brings you closest to the land, the water, the insects, and continued financial solvency. Hostels often have camping facilities, but many campsites are designed for people with caravans (RVs), not tents. Sites cost €5-15, depending on the level of luxury. It is legal to cross private land by public rights of way; any other use of private land without permission is considered trespassing. Whenever camping, remember that bogs catch fire extremely easily.

Camping in State Forests and National Parks is not allowed, nor is camping on public land if an official campsite is in the area. It is also illegal to start campfires within 3km of these forests and parks. Caravan and camping parks provide all the accoutrements of bourgeois civilization: toilets, showers, and sometimes kitchens, laundry facilities, and game rooms. At many sites, caravans are available for hire. Northern Ireland treats its campers well; there are equipped campsites throughout the country, and spectacular parks often house equally desirable sites.

The Great Outdoor Recreation Pages (www.gorp.com) provides excellent general information for travelers planning on camping or spending time in the outdoors.

  • Leave No Trace. Let’s Go encourages travelers to embrace the “Leave No Trace” ethic, minimizing their impact on natural environments and protecting them for future generations. Trekkers and wilderness enthusiasts should set up camp on durable surfaces, use cookstoves instead of campfires, bury human waste away from water supplies, bag trash and carry it out with them, and respect wildlife and natural objects. For more detailed information, contact the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics, P.O. Box 997, Boulder, CO 80306 (☎800-332-4100 or 303-442-8222; www.lnt.org).
