Originally a Bohemian territory, Oberlausitz became part of Saxony when the Bohemian king could not repay the 72 tons of gold he borrowed from the Saxon king. Bordering two of Germany’s former Warsaw Pact neighbors (Poland and the Czech Republic), Oberlausitz has worked hard to overcome the economic stagnation it experienced prior to reunification, and has had remarkable success. Many building projects in the area have been devoted to breathing new life into long-neglected architecture and removing overbearing Socialist structures. The area around Bautzen exemplifies the successful rejuvenation of this pleasantly rural region on the edge of eastern Germany.
