Bolzano is technically located at the beginning of the Alps, despite local allegiance to the Dolomites. The hiking here pales in comparison with that of the Alps to the west or the Dolomites to the east. The CAI office has helpful info on outdoor activities. The best hikes can be accessed by the three funivie that surround the town and run straight to vista level. While Funivia del Renon and Funivia del Colle have limited marked trails, Funivia San Genesio services extensive marked trails of moderate difficulty. On Funivia del Renon, the ride itself is an attraction, as it gives a bird’s-eye view of curving grape arbors. All three funivie offer free maps that should suffice for the easier hikes. Drop by the San Genesio tourist office, Schrann 7 (☎0471 35 41 96; www.jenesien.net) before starting out. The pleasant walk from the San Genesio Funivia to the Edelweiss rest house, to the Tachaufenhaus, and then back to the funivie via the Locher rest house, makes for a pleasant 4hr. hike. Even on the easiest hikes, take precautions against dehydration and sun exposure.
