Perugia Accommodations

Book in advance for the Umbria Jazz and Eurochocolate Festivals. The rest of the time, you're likely to have the town to yourself.

  • Ostello Ponte Felcino, V. Maniconi 97 (☎075 59 13 991; www.ostellopontefelcino.com), Settled in the gardens of Ponte Felcino just outside of Perugia, this well-kept hostel gives its guests a taste of authentic small town Umbrian life. Bus service is frequent into P. dei Partigiani. Clean rooms, complimentary breakfast, and spacious common areas. Internet access available. Dinner €10. Dorms €16; singles €22; doubles €36.

  • Ostello Perugia, V. Bontempi 13 (☎075 57 22 880; www.ostello.perugia.it), This hostel's main perk is its location right in the centro. Dorms are plain and divided by gender between two floors, but the common spaces are indeed spacious. The kitchen has eight ranges to accommodate many cooks in the kitchen and a row of picnic tables for when the meal's ready. The view from the small terrace can't be beat. A large library (large enough to merit use of the Dewey Decimal System) contains mostly academic texts in Italian and German, but hey, it's a library in a hostel. The midday lockout is lame, so plan ahead. And really plan ahead to book your bed for the Umbria Jazz Festival, when you definitely don't want to be stuck staying outside the city. From P. IV Novembre, facing the Duomo, take the street that's behind you to the right, V. Bontempi, and bear right until the hostel. Linens €2. Dorms €15. Reception 7:30-10am and 4pm-midnight. Curfew 3:30am. Strict lockout 11am-3:30pm. Closed Dec 15-Jan 15. Takes credit cards. Wheelchair access.
  • Hotel Priori, V. Vermiglioli 3 (☎075 57 23 378; www.hotelpriori.it), This hotel is a bit of a maze—there are so many rooms scattered through so many hallways behind so many unnecessary doors that you might suspect it was originally one of those “riot-proof” college dormitories. In reality, it was just a 15th-century house. When you get lost, there are a lot of signs pointing you to the lobby or the breakfast room, the latter being the better destination. Breakfast is served on a glass-enclosed (and, mercifully, climate-controlled) patio on the panoramic terrace. Appropriate to a town with a chocolate factory, there's also a great glass elevator—take it to the top floor to really feel like you'll head up and out. On the corner of V. dei Priori. Breakfast included. Singles €45-70; doubles €65-95. Extra €20 for ensuite A/C. Reception 24hr. Takes credit cards. Wheelchair access. Has internet. Has air conditioning.
  • Perugia Farmhouse Backpacker Hostel, Strada Torre Poggio 4 (San Sisto) (☎339 56 20 005; www.perugia-farmhouse.it), The swimming pool is absolutely gorgeous, and the farmhouse bit ain't no lie: chickens, a donkey, two mean geese, an affectionate turkey, and a horse roam these grounds. Importantly, despite what you might read on the internet, no night transportation from the city connects to the hostel. The last bus leaves Perugia at 9:15pm. Given the city's expensive taxis, this is a very poor base for any car-less individual hoping to live it up after 10pm. You'll have plenty of fun at the farmhouse itself, though, with the chickens providing breakfast, the other farm animals providing company, a communal kitchen, and a DIY party atmosphere—Thursday night talent shows around the pool are highly recommended. For the location, beds should be a few euros cheaper, and management seriously needs to invest in a few fans—the east-facing dorms are ovens at dawn. All the same, it's hard to quibble when the pool is so darn nice. From the train station, take the C or D bus toward Pila. Get off in front of Bar Olympia and walk back 20m for Strada Torre Poggio. Breakfast included. Free Wi-Fi. Dorms €18-23. Does not take credit cards. No wheelchair access. Has internet.
  • Albergo Anna, V. dei Priori 48 (☎075 57 36 304; www.albergoanna.it), Stuffed lounges full of framed photos and chintzy armchairs, combined with random details like colorful terra-cotta fireplaces in otherwise plain rooms, make this small hotel memorable. Downhill from C. Vannucci, the street that splits Palazzo dei Priori. Singles €30-40, with bath €40-50; doubles €60-90. Does not take credit cards. No wheelchair access.

  • La Rosetta, P. Italia 19 (☎075 57 20 841; www.perugiaonline.com/larosetta), This hotel has a posh-circa-1922 look, and despite the beautiful Renaissance ceiling frescoes in a couple of the suites, the decoration scheme is very early-to-mid-20th century. There's even a card room with green felt covered tables off the lobby. The rooms chichi it up a bit with golden upholstery and gilded art prints, but the undercurrent of late Deco can't be erased. The hotel is 1 side of P. Italia, but enter through the restaurant courtyard on the right. Singles €81-100; doubles €120-210. Takes credit cards. Wheelchair access. Has internet. Has air conditioning.
