Towering above the city to the north, the Rocca Maggiore can help orient those lost among Assisi’s winding streets. The bus from the train station stops first at Piazza Unità d’Italia; get off here for direct access to the Basilica di San Francesco. Stay on the bus until Piazza Matteotti to access the centro from above. To reach Piazza del Comune, take Via del Torrione from P. Matteotti to Piazza San Rufino; take the downhill left in the piazza, and then walk down Via San Rufino. From P. del Comune Via Portica becomes V. Fortini, V. del Seminario, and, finally, V. San Francesco and connects P. del Comune to the Basilica di San Francesco. Heading in the opposite direction from P. del Comune, Corso Mazzini leads to the Basilica di Santa Chiara.

TOURIST OFFICES:Ufficio Turismo provides excellent self-guided walking tours of Assisi and the region as well as themed itineraries.
