Assisi Restaurants
Pasticceria Santa Monica, V. Portica 4, right off P. del Comune, sells delectables native to Assisi. Mouth-watering torrone (a sweet nougat of almonds and egg whites; €4.00 per 100g) and the divine brustengoli (a cake packed with raisins, apples, and pine nuts; €3.50 per 100g) are well-priced treats among the city’s often marked-up sweets. (Open daily 10:30am-11pm. Cash only.) For fresh produce on weekdays, head to the market on V. San Gabriele dell’Addolorata. The only grocery stores in town are small alimentari scattered around the city’s center, which cater primarily to misled tourists with their stocks of high-priced Umbrian prodotti tipici. The nearest supermarket, Issimo, is a steep hill hike away, located in P. Garibaldi, near the Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli. (Open daily 7:30am-1pm and 4:30-8pm. MC/V.)
- Pizzeria Otello, V. Sant’Antonio 1 On the far right of the Palazzo dei Priori from Via Portica. Arrive early for a spot at one of the long wooden tables to taste one of the popular pizzas (€5.50-8). Or try the deliciously creamy strangozzi al tartufo (pasta with truffles; €7). Open daily noon-3pm and 7-10:30pm
- Ristorante da Cecco, P. San Pietro 8 (☎075 81 24 37; www.hotelberti.it), A crowded, country-kitchen sort of restaurant with checkered tableclothes and stone walls, da Cecco has made fresh pasta its specialty—try the strangozzi with sausage, cream, and mushrooms (€8). Menu in four languages. Just off the Cover €2. Open daily noon-2:30pm and 7:10-9:30pm. Takes credit cards. Wheelchair access. Serves alcohol. Has air conditioning. Has outdoor seating.
- Il Duomo Pizzeria, V. Porta Perlici 11 (☎075 81 63 26; www.assisiduomo.com), This dining room makes use of its 13th-century building's natural architecture—the worn-smooth stone and rounded walls will make you feel like you're in a pizza oven. Don't worry, though: it's not that warm. It is yummy, however, with 30 inexpensive varieties of pizza awaiting—try the ricotta and spinach. The first dining room of this secretly huge place opens onto a courtyard space with two more levels of seating. From the Duomo, take a right. Pizza €4.50-7.80. Open noon-3pm and 7-10pm. Takes credit cards. No wheelchair access. Serves alcohol.
- La Rocca, V. Porta Perlici 27 (☎075 81 22 84; www.hotelarocca.it), The elegant blue dining room and scenic terrace seem a bit too classy for the excellent prices on the menu of this hotel-restaurant. The “Menu Franciscan” in particular—primo, contorno, fruit, and cover (€9.50)—seems a deal cheap enough for the poverty-lovin' saint himself. Where V. Porta Perlici turns through the porta itself. Cover €1.30. Salads €2.50-4.50. Open M-Tu 12:15-1:45pm and 7-9pm, Th-Su 12:15-1:45pm and 7-9pm. Takes credit cards. Wheelchair access. Serves alcohol. Has air conditioning. Has outdoor seating.
