Positano Accommodations

Expect anything from expensive four-star hotels to charming and cheap bed and breakfasts. The most affordable spots are located on the hill descending from the Chiesa Nuova SITA bus stop. Closer to the coast and up the other side around Positano Sponda, bigger and costlier hotels are more common.

• Ostello Brikette, V. Guglielmo Marconi 358 (☎089 87 58 57; www.brikette.com), Positano's only hostel delivers with a laid-back staff, a social and panoramic terrace to rival those of nearby hotels, and bright, spacious dorms. Though you can't use the kitchen, cheap bar grub and beer and a communal refrigerator should save you from Positano's more expensive options. That's not to mention the bountiful breakfast options, including America's two favorite morning foods: pancakes and eggs (€2-4). The only thing you don't have is the beach lapping at your door, but the hostel's location near the bus actually makes it more convenient than central hotels. From Chiesa Nuova stop, walk 100m to the left of Bar Internazionale and climb steps. Breakfast €2-4. Bag storage after checkout €2 per bag. • Casa Cosenza, V. Trara Genoino 18 (☎089 87 50 63; www.casacosenza.it), Tiled floors, arched ceilings, and stripped wooden doors set this lovely guesthouse apart from other accommodations this close to the coastal center. Casa Cosenza's only single is snug but great if you like simplicity and ocean views. Doubles are much more spacious and feature terraces or balconies with views that make them feel even bigger. Plants and a tiled walkway leading to the rooms might remind you of the countryside instead of the ocean. Though breakfast is expensive, the continental offerings could be satisfying enough to last you through lunch. From the tourist office, exit onto V. Trara Genoino, heading up stairs in the direction of V. Pasitea. Look for signs on the right of the small street. Breakfast €10. All rooms with ensuite bathroom. Free Wi-Fi. • B and B Villa Palumbo, Vle. Pasitea 334 (☎089 87 59 82; www.villapalumbo.it), If you're thinking about staying in one of Positano's hotels, consider the five bedrooms offered at this small bed and breakfast instead. Lace curtains lead to private terraces with unbelievable views of the coast and cliffs. Though rooms aren't huge, they are well cared-for, and the sunny vistas make them feel airy. The friendly owner serves homecooked breakfast on the public terrace and even leaves a bottle of wine and snack in each room upon arrival. From Chiesa Nuova stop, walk downhill for 5min. and look for sign on the left. Breakfast included. Rooms have private bath. Singles €50-70; doubles €60-80; triples €70-90. Reception 8am-9pm.
