Trani’s main attraction is the cathedral, located on V. Archivo near P. Trieste. The bones of Trani’s patron saint, St. Nicholas the Pilgrim, are in a crypt under the church. (Open M-Sa 8:15am-12:15pm and 3:15-6:30pm, Su 9am-12:45pm and 4-7pm.). The other main monument is the nearby Castello Svevo. Make sure to enjoy the view along the way from the cathedral. Built by Frederick II, Holy Roman emperor from 1215-1250, the castle was most recently used as a prison; consequently, it is more impressive outside than in. Don’t rely on the clock at its entrance, as it has been broken for years. (Open daily 8:30am-7pm. €2, ages 18-25 €1, under 18 and over 65 free.) The Villa Comunale, past P. Plebiscito, is often an unfairly overlooked sight. It has a small park, gardens, a mini-aquarium, and most importantly, stunning views of the whole city. (Open daily 7am-midnight.)
