Cala Gonone is positioned to allow access to several beaches and adventure-sport venues. V. Bue Marino leads 3km along the waterfront, passing long stretches of beach before arriving at the resplendent Cala Fuili (cove). Treasured by Italians for its crystal-clear waters and tropical backdrop, and now infamous as the site of Madonna’s Swept Away remake, Cala Luna is accessible by boat or foot. Sheltered by limestone cliffs and fuschia oleanders, the cove has maintained its beauty despite the boatloads of tourists that visit daily. To reach Cala Luna, hike a strenuous 2hr. on the 4km trail that departs from Cala Fuili or take the Consorzio Trasporti Marittimi ferry to Cala Luna. (☎0784 93 305; port ticket booth ☎0784 92 00 51. 8 per day 9am-5pm, last return 6:30pm; round-trip €15.)
Consorzio also runs ferries to the elusive Bue Marino, accessible only by sea. (Ferry fees include guided tour. Bue Marino: round-trip €17, ages 6-12 €10. Bue Marino and Cala Luna: €24, ages 6-12 €16.) These well-conducted tours are a great value for an opportunity to see beautiful sights that are truly one-of-a-kind. Tour guides lead visitors through cave chambers that conceal natural curiosities, including the dripping stalactites of the “Candle Room,” and the “Mirrors Room,” in which a large pool of water reflects off the cave walls in a rainbow of colors, owing to variances in mineral composition. (30min. tours offered in English and Italian. July-Sept. 7 per day; May-June 2 per day. Photographs prohibited. €8.) Atlantika, V. Amerigo Vespucci or V.
