An internationally renowned tropical playground, Phuket Province begs comparison to Bali and other over-touristed, sun-drenched paradises. Thailand’s biggest island in the Andaman Sea, and its wealthiest province, Phuket draws tourists looking for anything but a cultural or solitary experience. Most visitors arrive by plane and are swiftly shepherded into A/C taxis, which deposit them at five-star luxury resorts. As such, Phuket can be less than friendly for the budget traveler, but there are some good deals to be found, especially if you travel in the low season or if prime sleeping digs are not a priority. Likewise, there are still a couple of beautiful secluded beaches for those willing to get off the backpacker trail and settle for less comfortable bungalows. The majority of backpackers, however, come to relax with fellow farang on beaches like Hat Kamala and Hat Karon by day and cruise the discos in the infamous nightlife hub, Hat Patong, by night.
For 52 years, we have published the world’s favorite budget travel guides, written entirely by students and updated every year. With pen and notebook in hand and a few changes of underwear stuffed in our backpacks, we spend months roaming the globe in search of travel bargains.
