The beauty of the Pilbara is rugged and dramatic. The land is harsh to unprepared travelers: hundreds of kilometers of arid bush separate the region’s small industrial towns, and summer temperatures are searing. In the late winter and early spring, however, the heat becomes bearable and the landscape explodes into fields of pale yellow spinifex, red Stuart peas, and purple mulla-mulla flowers. The Pilbara has recently seen an increase in mining, resulting in some of the most lucrative seasonal work opportunities in Australia.
