While accommodations in Barcelona are easy to spot, finding an affordable bed or room can be more difficult. During one of the busier months (June-Sept. or Dec.), wandering up and down La Rambla looking for a place can be a recipe for anxiety and frustration. If you want to stay in a touristy area, reserve weeks ahead. Consider staying outside heavily trafficked Ciutat Vella; there are plenty of hostels in the Zona Alta, particularly in Gràcia, that have more vacancies. For the best rooms, l’Eixample has good deals and is also quiet at night. La Ribera and El Raval are smart alternatives to the hectic Barri Gòtic; they’re just as close to the action and often cheaper. There are some less reputable parts of El Raval on the side streets farther from La Rambla, so choose wisely.
