Barcelona Barceloneta

Museu D’Història De Catalunya. The last gasp of the old city before you hit the packed beaches of Barceloneta, the Museu provides a patriotic introduction to Catalan history, politics, and culture. The detailed displays, diagrams, and artifacts (all with English captions) all help thread together the centuries of background behind all the historical sights you’ve been marveling at in Barcelona. The city’s entire history is here: Neolithic tools; artifacts of the Roman and Islamic rules of the AD first millennium; exhibits on the repression of Catalunya by Felipe V; the Renaixença and development of Modernisme; the Civil War; the rule of Franco, and the resurgence of culture and industry since Franco’s death. (Whew.) Recreations of a 1930s Spanish bar, an AD eighth-century Islamic prayer tent, and other dioramas make the museum a full sensory experience. (Pl. Pau Vila, 3. Near entrance to the Moll d’Espanya; left walk out toward Barceloneta. ☎932 25 47 00; www.mhcat.com. Open Tu and Th-Sa 10am-7pm, W 10am-8pm, Su 10am-2:30pm. €4; under 18 and students €3; university students, under 7, and over 65 free. Free 1st Su of the month.)
