Prior to the 20th century, Hessen was known for exporting mercenary soldiers to rulers like King George III, who enlisted them to control an unruly gang of colonials across the Atlantic in 1776. Today, Hessen’s ivy-clad castles and immense steeples find their modern analog in the region’s skyscrapers. Hessen is the busiest economic center in the country, led by the unsparing financial behemoth of Frankfurt. Overshadowed by its capital, the rest of understated Hessen attracts little tourist attention, leaving the medieval charisma of Marburg and the artistic offerings of Kassel blessedly secluded.
