A collection of sunburned towns rich in Aboriginal history and meandering waterways, the Riverina is a worthwhile sojourn on the trek from Melbourne to Sydney. The two main rivers are the Murrumbidgee, which starts as a trickle in the Snowy Mountains, and the Murray, which becomes significant at Albury-Wodonga and flows all the way to Adelaide. Although it lacks traditional tourist bait (like ocean views), the Riverina’s plethora of farming and picking opportunities makes it a popular spot for backpackers (see Beyond Tourism).
