Freed from the stagnation of the DDR and bent on revitalization, Sachsen (Saxony) has embarked on some of Europe’s most ambitious reconstruction projects. While older Saxons—most of whom were taught Russian in school—pass on the region’s history, and dialect, a hopeful new generation keeps its cities lively and forward-looking. Though student-driven Leipzig, resurgent Dresden, and the legendary castles of August the Strong on the Elbe draw crowds from across the world, some of Saxony’s greatest treasures have yet to be discovered by international tourists. Home to Germany’s only native ethnic minority, the Sorbs, Saxony is marked by the verve and diversity of a region rebuilding itself in grand design.
