Two hostels are north of the city, near the beautiful Tegeler See lake.

  • Backpacker’s Paradise, Ziekowstr. 161 (☎030 433 86 40; www.backpackersparadise.de). Take the U6 to Alt-Tegel, and then bus #222 or night bus #N22 (dir.: Alt-Lübars) to Titusweg. Alternatively, take the S25 to Tegel, take a right out of the station, and walk 20m to catch the #222. Nightly campfires, hot showers, and a free-spirited vibe in a little yard behind the Jugendgästehaus. Cheapest overnight stays in Berlin. Space is nearly always available, except when overrun by school groups. Breakfast buffet €2.50. Laundry €4. Free internet. Bike rental €4. Reception 24hr. Open May 15 to Sept. 1. €8.50 gets you a blanket and foam pad in a 20-person tent, €1 more buys a cot to put them on. Bring a sleeping bag. Cash only.
  • Jugendgästehaus Tegel, Ziekowstr. 161 (☎030 433 30 46; www.jugendgaestehaus-tegel.de). A dignified red brick building with an institutional, boarding-school feel. Breakfast included. Linens €3. Free internet. Reception 7:30am-midnight. €20 per person. Under 27 only. Cash only.
