San Isidro Overview

One hundred thirty-eight kilometers southeast of San José, the city of San Isidro de El General, also known as Pérez Zeledón, is a center of modernity among several rural villages. Though the urban streets are unusually clean and friendly, the attractions of the asphalt terrain pale in comparison to the beauty and serenity of the surrounding countryside. The city makes for an ideal springboard for trips into the surrounding national parks and other areas of southern Costa Rica, where rustic splendor contrasts with the city’s bustle.

While finding the right bus out of San Isidro is complicated by the fact that the five different companies that share the town don’t share destinations, all five have well-staffed and well-marked stations, which makes things a little easier.

  • Musoc (☎2771 0414) buses go to San José from the terminal on the Interamericana Hwy. between C. 2 and 4 (3hr., every hr. 5:30am-5:30pm plus at 6:30pm F-Sa, ¢1935). Ticket office open daily 6am-5:30pm.
  • Transportes Blancos (☎2771 2550), located on the curve between Av. 2 and Av. 4 on the east side of town and marked by a Soda Quepos sign, has buses to: Dominical (1½hr.; 7, 9am, 4pm; ¢800); Puerto Jiménez (6hr.; 6:30am, 3pm; ¢2300); Quepos (3½hr.; 7, 11:30am, 3:30pm; ¢1300); Uvita (2hr.; 9am, 4pm; ¢950). Ticket office open daily 6:15-11am and 1:30-4pm.
  • Tracopa (☎2771 0468), on the corner of the Interamericana Hwy. and C. 3, has service to Golfito (3.5hr.; 10am, 6pm; ¢1520), San Vito (3½hr.; 9, 11am, 2:30, 7pm; ¢2820), the Panamanian border at Paso Canoas (4hr.; 8:30am, 4, 7:30, 9pm; ¢1520). Ticket office open M-Sa 4:30am-7pm, Su 4:30am-3pm.
  • Gafeso (☎2771 0097), next to Transportes Blancos, has buses to Buenos Aires (1½hr.; direct at 5:15, 7:20, 10am, 12:15, 3, 5pm; indirect at 6, 8:30, 11:30am, 1:30, 4, 7:45, 10pm; ¢685). From the local bus terminal on the south side of the mercado, buses leave to nearby villages including Quedabras (11 per day, 15min., 6:45am-7:25pm; ¢250) and San Gerardo (1hr., 2pm, ¢900). Another bus to San Gerardo leaves from the west side of the parque at 5am.
  • Taxis: They line the north and west sides of the parque central, south of Av. 6 between C. Central and C.1, next to MUSOC bus terminal. Going to San Gerardo is ¢10,000.

Orientation And Practical Information

Unlike most other towns in Costa Rica, San Isidro has well-marked streets with signs on almost every corner near the center of town. Avenida Central and Calle 0 meet at the northwest corner of the parque central. Overlooking the eastern side of the parque central, the spires of the large modern cathedral, visible from most places downtown, serve as useful landmarks.
