Tourist-friendly Skopelos sits between the whirlwind of Skiathos and the largely untouched wilderness of Alonnisos, incorporating the best elements of both. Hikes and moped rides through shady forests lead to numerous monasteries, bright beaches, and white cliffs that drop into a sparkling blue sea. By night, the town’s waterfront strip closes to traffic, crowds swarm the streets, and a number of low-key bars and a few quality clubs maintain a party atmosphere. The island’s most recent claim to fame as the filming location of the movie Mamma Mia has brought the beautiful beaches and towns into the spotlight. The island itself is still starstruck, rebranded as “Mamma Mia’s island,” a status which will only increase Skopelos’s popularity as an up-and-coming tourist destination.
