The well-paved Costanera Sur Hwy. curves along the Central Pacific coast, connecting Jacó to Quepos and passing many quiet, largely deserted beaches on the way. These tiny beach communities can barely be called towns; they are mostly remote residential pastures with a few cabinas and hotels scattered along the beaches. These shores draw vacationing tico families and some local surfers during the Christmas holiday and Semana Santa (Easter), but otherwise the pristine beaches and their powerful waves are only crowded by the surfers and tourists trading in the nightlife and crowded streets of Jacó for better waves and more relaxation. Surfing is especially good at Esterillos Oeste and Playa Bejuco, where big waves break on the sand, and waves become larger heading south to Playa Bandera. These beaches are best for large groups of skilled surfers or anybody who would rather enjoy the beach or the breaks without the crowd. Beaches are listed north to south from Jacó to Quepos.
