OTHER Italy DESTINATIONS

Rome Classical Music And Opera

  • Teatro dell'Opera, P. Beniamino Gigli 7 (www.operaroma.it), Once you've caught a glimpse of the 6m chandelier and frescoes by Annibale Brugnoli gracing this four-tier theater, you'll be happy you shelled out the extra euro even if arias, pirouettes, and musical overtures aren't exactly your thing. If you really did just come for the opera and ballet, you might consider Teatro dell'Opera's affiliated newer and less ornate Teatro Nazionale across the street, which has cheaper tickets. From June 30 to early fall, additional performances are held outdoors at the Baths of Caracalla (Terme di Caracalla). A: Repubblica. Walk down V. Nazionale, then turn left onto V. Firenze and left onto V. del Viminale. 2nd location (Teatro Nazionale) at V. del Viminale 51. Tickets can also be bought online at At Teatro dell'Opera opera €17-130, ballet €11-65; at Teatro Nazionale opera €30, ballet €20. Students and over 65 receive 25% discount. • Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Vle. Pietro de Coubertin 30 (www.santacecilia.it), Founded in 1585 as a conservatory, the Accademia is now both a place of training for aspiring and renowned musicians and a professional symphonic orchestra. Past conductors have included Debussy, Strauss, Stravinsky, and Toscanini. Concerts are held in three massive halls located in the Parco della Musica near Flaminio, so if you're as much into the great outdoors as you are into music, this is the perfect venue. A: Flaminio and then tram #2 to P. Euclide. Or take the special line “M” from Termini (every 15min. starting at 5pm) to Auditorium. Last bus after last performance. Box office at Largo Luciano Berio 3. Tickets €18-47. Box office open daily 11am-8pm. Takes credit cards.
  • Teatro Flaiano, V. Santo Stefano del Cacco 15 (☎06 67 96 496; www.piccolalirica.com), Contemporary and innovative takes on traditional opera give this small theater a definite edge on other companies. Shows are kept short—around 90min.—and highlight particularly melodramatic moments of already melodramatic works, including Tosca and Carmen in recent seasons. If you don't want to sit through three hours of arias, the productions' brevity and creative interpretations will certainly please. Tram #8. From V. Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, turn left onto V. del Gesu and right onto V. Santo Stefano del Cacco. Tickets €44-60. Box office open Tu-Sa 3-7pm; general office open Tu-Sa 11am-7pm. Shows at 8pm.
