In the summer, many Roman clubs shut down operations in the city and head out to the beach. Most are in Ostia, the closest beach to the center, with some notable others in Fregene and elsewhere. For example, Gilda on the Beach is the summer version of one of Rome’s most famous, upscale discos is at Lungomare di Ponente 11, in Fregene, 40km from city center. (Take the Fregene bus #1 from A-Lepanto. ☎06 66 56 06 49; www.gildabar.it. Open daily 11pm-4am. Cover €20.). To get to Ostia, head to B-Piramide. At the top of the stairs, turn left and follow signs to Ferrovia Roma-Lido. Your Metro ticket includes the train ride to Ostia Lido Centro (30min., every 15min. daily 5:40am-11:30pm). Beginning at 11:30pm, the N3 bus runs every 30-45min. from P. Venezia to Ostia and back. The train from Piramide and the N3 run along the beach to Ple. Cristoforo Colombo, and buses #06, 061, and 062 traverse the seaside until midnight. After that, be prepared for long walks between the bar clusters near different train stops if you have to hoof it; call a cab if you don’t feel like walking the 5km length of Ostia’s shore.
