As always, you should stay alert and check the latest travel advisories before departing. Managua, like any large city, demands a certain degree of caution and common sense, especially to avoid pickpockets. Touristed areas see a lot of petty crime; poorer neighborhoods and political demonstrations are best avoided entirely. Avoid traveling alone in rural areas. Sporadic armed violence is reported throughout the country, and bandits have been known to operate on the roads, especially in the rural northeast. See Safety and Health, , for more info.
Prophylaxis for malaria is recommended for travelers going to the outskirts of Managua and other rural areas.
