As always, you should stay alert and check the latest travel advisories before departing. Managua, like any large city, demands a certain degree of caution and common sense, especially to avoid pickpockets. Touristed areas see a lot of petty crime; poorer neighborhoods and political demonstrations are best avoided entirely. Avoid traveling alone in rural areas. Prophylaxis for malaria is recommended for travelers going to the outskirts of Managua and other rural areas.
