South of New Ross and west of Waterford, the Hook is a peaceful peninsula renowned for its historic abbeys, forts, and lighthouses. Sun-drenched coastlines draw deep-sea anglers to Waterford Harbour and Tramore Bay, while the pubs on the oceanfront keep the midnight oil burning long past midnight. Unfortunately, public transportation does not reach this burgeoning vacation region, so itinerant travelers must depend on cars or bikes. The peninsula is accessed by heading south along R733 from New Ross, or by crossing Waterford Harbour on the Ballyhack-Passage East ferry (every 10min.; cars €8, €12 round-trip). Let’s Go doesn’t endorse hitchhiking, though hitchers find rides fairly easily. Those who make it around the Ring of Hook are rewarded with stunning coastal views.
