Northeast of Limerick, the River Shannon widens into the lake region of Lough Derg. Affluent middle-aged tourists powerboat between the small towns of Killaloe, Ballina, Mountshannon, and Portumna; younger, vehicle-challenged travelers are rarer here than in regions to the south and west. Lough Derg’s summer watersport culture provides a good workout but little in the way of archaeological interest. Travelers lured into sleepy Sixmilebridge on their way to and from the airport enjoy a fabulous hostel and a breadth of scenic trails.
