The small isles of Rum, Eigg, Muck and Canna make stunning daytrips from the mainland. They offer everything from tours of a working Highland farm to Celtic music festivals to 2000 ft. mountain hikes. Small communities of islanders shower travelers with information about their beloved homes, but be sure to set aside plenty of time to explore the islands’ remote beauty on your own.
CalMac ferries (☎01687 462 403) sail from Mallaig to Rum (£8.50, 5-day round-trip £15), Eigg (£5.75/10.10), Muck (£8.70/15.40), and Canna (£10.75/18.60); call for schedules. Ferries require that cars have governmental permission to board, but many find that having a car registered in Scotland will suffice. They are timed to connect with trains from Glasgow and Fort William and charge £2.30 per bicycle. Gaming the ferry schedules so that you get to all of the isles can be difficult. A more convenient and expensive option is the MV Shearwater, operated by Arisaig Marine Ltd. (☎01687 450 224; www.arisaig.co.uk), which sails at 11am from Arisaig to Rum (June-Aug. Tu, Th, Sa; Sept. and Easter-June Tu and Th; round-trip £23), Eigg (M-W and F-Su; £17), and Muck (M, W, F, Su; £17).
