The Three Beiras region offers a versatile sampling of the best of Portugal: the pristine beaches of the coast, the rich greenery of the interior, and the ragged peaks of the Serra da Estrela. The Costa da Prata (Silver Coast) lines the shore, passing through Aveiro on the way to Porto. Its countryside is dotted with red-roofed farmhouses surrounded by expanses of corn, sunflowers, and wheat. A mecca for youth since the days in which it boasted the only university in Portugal, Coimbra hosts an opinionated, lively population; its nightlife, folklore and gorgeous architecture continue to attract young people. Only recently discovered by tourists, the region retains a wealth of Portuguese traditions.
