Athens Pagrati

Kolonaki’s high prices may scare off budget travelers, but Pagrati has a few affordable accommodations. Pagrati is relatively far from the city center, so if you’re looking for something to do at night, try one of the many (over-priced) cafes lining Imittou, the neighborhood’s main drag.

  • Pagration Athens Youth Hostel, Damareos 75 (☎21075 19 530). From Omonia or Pl. Syndagma, take trolley #2 or 11 to Filolaou (past Imittou) or walk through the National Garden, down Eratosthenous, then 3 blocks down Efthidiou to Frinis and down Frinis until you come to Damareos; it’s on your right. There’s no sign for this cheery, family-owned hostel—just the number 75 and a green door. The charming common spaces and ultra-helpful staff make this out-of-the-way hostel worth the 20-25min. walk to the city center. TV lounge and full kitchen. Hot showers €0.50. Laundry €4 to wash, with dryer €7; or line-dry on the roof for free. Quiet hours 2:30-5pm and 11pm-7am. High-season dorms €12. When the hostel fills up, the owner opens the roof (€10 per person) to travelers; bring a sleeping bag. Cash only.
