The Valais occupies the deep glacial gorge traced by the Rhône River. The clefts of the valley divide the land linguistically: in the west, French dominates, and in the east, Swiss German is used. Though its mountain resorts can be crowded, the region’s spectacular peaks make fighting the traffic worthwhile.
