Beautiful Waterford Harbour straddles the Waterford-Wexford county line east of Waterford City. Its orientation and proximity to England once made it a prime target for invasion, which led to the construction of Duncannon Fort under the supervision of Queen Elizabeth. It also inspired Oliver Cromwell’s catchy phrase “by hook or by crook”; he schemed to capture Waterford City via either Hook Head or its cross-harbor neighbor Crooke Village. The Passage East Car Ferry (☎382 480) provides a fast and convenient alternative to circumnavigating the harbor—it zips you across the water between Ballyhack and Passage East in under ten minutes (€8 one-way, €12 return). While the trip is a swell ride by car, the roads outside of Waterford are hilly and windy, and the long journey tests the stamina of even the staunchest cyclists.
