Wattenmeer National Park:

Wattenmeer National Park Destinations

OTHER Schleswig-Holstein DESTINATIONS

Wattenmeer National Park Overview

Twice daily, tides rush out of the Wattenmeer National Park, laying kilometers of the ocean floor completely exposed. The Frisian Islands make up one component of a much large, and ecologically diverse wonder. The delicately sloping continental shelf along the coast that creates this dramatic ebb and flow sustains a unique ecology at Wattenmeer, the westernmost of Germany’s three Wattenmeer parks. Dunes formed here millions of years ago, protecting the islands from erosion and the flora and fauna from salt water. Hundreds of local plant and insect species interact in the protected island interiors, while various fish, birds, and invertebrates have evolved to thrive on the surrounding ocean floor mudflats. Familiar with the intricacies of the Watt terrain and timing of the tides, local experts lead popular Wattwanderung (Watt walk) groups out onto the flats during low tides, describing this specialized ecosystem as everyone enjoys a romp in the mud.
