Spain Images Of Iberia

The insatiable frenzy of the Queima das Fitas in Coimbra , Las Fallas in Valencia , the Feria de Abril in Sevilla , and the infamous San Fermín in Pamplona make it difficult to deny the overwhelming exuberance of the Iberian peninsula. But underneath Iberian fervor is a rich sonority of feeling—the poignant expressions of heartbreak are often as gripping and adrenaline-charged as the celebrations. The ritually tragic emotions of Portuguese fado would bring tears to the eyes of even the most macho bullfighters, who in turn create their own tragedies on Spanish sands. Meanwhile, art and architecture like Picasso’s powerfully symbolic Guernica and the propagandistic Valle de los Caídos immortalize the real tragedies that scarred Spain during the last century. But ample opportunity exists for peace and quiet in the thin-aired reverence of Montserrat , the serenity of a rowboat in El Retiro , or the surreal calm of Parc Güell .
