Iberia’s best-kept secrets are its sprawling national parks and soaring, snow-covered mountain ranges. Andorra , in the heart of the Pyrenees, has easily accessible glacial valleys, rolling forests, and wild meadows. In northern Spain, the Parque Nacional de Ordesa features well-kept trails, rushing rivers, and thundering waterfalls, while the Parc Nacional d’Aigüestortes hides 50 ice-cold mountain lakes in its 24,700 acres of rugged peaks and valleys. The Picos de Europa offer some of Europe’s best mountaineering. Northern Portugal’s Parque Natural de Montesinho is probably the most isolated, untouched land in all of Europe. Farther south, greenery-starved madrileños hike the Sierra de Guadarrama , and nature-lovers are drawn to Andalucía’s huge Parque Nacional Coto de Doñana , which protects nearly 60,000 acres of land for threatened wildlife. In the south, Las Alpujarras are perfect for hiking among Spain’s famous pueblos blancos (white towns). Morocco’s fertile, green Rif Mountains contrast with the deep oranges of the dramatic High Atlas , both popular with trekkers.
