Squatter, lumpier, and less traveled than the rest of the county, western Wicklow is green, friendly, and free from crowds of tourists. It’s possible to hike between western Wicklow and the Wicklow Way, but turn around at red flags; the Irish Army maintains a few shooting ranges in the region. Hiking is relatively safe in un-flagged areas. Lungnaquilla Mountain, the highest peak in Co. Wicklow, has stunning views and challenging hiking trails.
