Carpeted in heather and rushing with water, the 600m high Wicklow summits are home to scattered villages and grazing sheep. Glendalough, a valley renowned as a medieval monastic village, draws a steady stream of coach tours from Dublin. Drivers should be careful as they maneuver around hikers, bikers, tour buses, and flocks of sheep. All but the most weathered hikers find portions of the Wicklow Way challenging, but the effort is rewarded with the best-maintained trailpath in the country and its charming hostels and B&Bs. Stop by the tourist offices in Glendalough, Bray, Wicklow Town, Arklow, and Rathdrum for maps and advice.
