With a mountain bike, you can also do some serious sightseeing. Some airlines will count your bike as your second piece of luggage, but others charge extra. The additional fee runs about US$50-150 each way. Airlines sell bike boxes at the airport, although it is easier and cheaper to get one from a local bike store. Most ferries let you take your bike for free or for a nominal fee. You can almost always ship your bike on trains, though the cost varies. Renting a bike beats bringing your own if your touring will be confined to one or two regions. Let’s Go lists bike rental shops for larger cities and towns, when they exist. Some youth hostels rent bicycles for low prices. Some train stations rent bikes and often allow you to drop them off elsewhere.
