In both Spain and Portugal, motorized bikes are a popular method of transportation for locals, and they can be a fun alternative for tourist daytrips. However, they’re uncomfortable for long distances, dangerous in the rain, and unpredictable on rough roads and gravel. Always wear a helmet, and never ride with a backpack. If you’ve never been on a moped, the windy roads of the Pyrenees and the congested streets of Madrid are not the place to start. Before renting, ask if the quoted price includes tax and insurance, or you may be hit with an unexpected additional fee. Pay ahead of time instead—do not hand over your passport.
