Spain By Thumb

  • Let’S Not Go.Let’s Go never recommends hitchhiking as a safe means of transportation, and none of the information here is intended to do so.

Let’s Go strongly urges you to consider the risks before you choose to hitchhike. Hitching means entrusting your life to a stranger and risking assault, sexual harassment, theft, and unsafe driving. For women traveling alone (or even in pairs), hitching is a risky proposal. A man and a woman are a less dangerous combination; two men will have a harder time getting a lift. In Spain, hitchers report that Castilla and Andalucía are long, hot waits, and hitchhiking out of Madrid is virtually impossible. The Mediterranean Coast and the islands are more promising, and remote areas in Cataluña, Galicia, or the Pyrenees may be most accessible by hitching (if renting a car is not an option). In Portugal, hitchhikers are rare. Beach-bound locals occasionally hitch in summer, but otherwise stick to the inexpensive bus system.
