Great Britain Studying

  • Visa Information. As of November 2003, citizens of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the US require a visa if they plan to study in the UK for longer than 6 months. Consult www.ukvisas.gov.uk to determine if you require a visa. Immigration officials will request a letter of acceptance from your UK university and proof of funding for your first year of study, as well as a valid passport, from all people wishing to study in the UK. Student visas cost £99, and application forms can be obtained through the website above.

It’s hard to dread the first day of school when London is your campus and exotic restaurants are your meal plan. A growing number of students report that studying abroad is the highlight of their learning careers. If you’ve never studied abroad, you don’t know what you’re missing—and if you have studied abroad, you do know what you’re missing. Either way, let’s go back to school!

Study-abroad programs range from basic language and culture courses to university-level classes, often for college credit (it’s legit, Mom and Dad). In order to choose a program that best fits your needs, research as much as you can before making your decision—determine costs and duration, as well as what kind of students participate in the program and what sorts of accommodations are provided. Back-to-school shopping was never this much fun. The British Council, Bridgewater House, 58 Whitworth St., Manchester M1 6BB (☎0161 957 7755; www.britishcouncil.org), is an invaluable source of information. The Council on International Educational Exchange (☎+1-888-268-6245; www.ciee.org) offers a searchable online database listing study-abroad opportunities according to region. Devoted to international student mobility, the Council for International Education, 9-17 St. Albans Pl., London N1 ONX (☎020 7288 4330; www.ukcosa.org.uk), is another important resource.

For accommodations, dorm life provides a better opportunity to mingle with fellow students, but there is less of a chance to experience the local scene while living with other foreigners. If you live with a family, you could potentially build lifelong friendships with natives and experience day-to-day life in more depth, but you might also get stuck sharing a room with their pet iguana. Conditions can vary greatly from family to family.
