On boot-shaped Yorke, sandy flats punctuate rolling farmland, and the sheer cliffs that loom over the hinterland storm into the sea. Sometimes called the “golden plains,” the area’s extraordinary fertility has made it one of South Australia’s leading grain-producing regions. While agriculture may not exactly captivate visitors, the isolated coastline and shipwreck diving spots certainly will. Native fauna still claims the bottom of the peninsula in Innes National Park, where rare birds take refuge from the fierce winds and surfers battle some of South Australia’s biggest and baddest waves.
