The varied landscapes of Zakynthos are filled with an exceptional palette of colors—white cliffs rise from aquamarine water, sun-bleached wheat fields wave in the shadow of evergreens, and magenta flowers frame the twisting streets. It is also the only remaining habitat of the endangered loggerhead sea turtles, and as soon as you step on the island, you understand why—the waters’ exceptional beauty and clarity would attract any creature. The area surrounding the town of Zakynthos, also called Zante, makes a good base, with many accommodations near the town’s center. Public buses travel up and down the island, helping pale visitors escape to the coastal beaches and back again. The northern tip of the island, accessible by boat tours leaving from the port of Zante, is less trafficked. Day cruises are a pleasant way to visit the island’s renowned shipwreck and blue grottoes.
