The rocky cliffs of the Zittau Mountains rise in a sliver of Germany wedged between the Czech Republic and Poland. Once a favorite spot of medieval monks, these beehive-shaped mountains are now the conquests of choice for skiers, hikers, and landscape lovers. In 1491, the region was the scene of the vicious Bierkrieg (Beer War), when incensed citizens of nearby Görlitz protested Zittau’s beer-brewing success by destroying barrels of the brew. Despite unemployment rates of 20%, towns like Zittau keep the area vibrant.
