P. Testaccio is just past V. Luca della Robbia. In the piazza, you will find Testaccio Market, a small market set up in metal huts. Numerous vendors offer fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, pasta, candy, nuts, and a variety of prepared foods. (Prices vary, most by weight. Open M-Sa 6am-2pm. Cash only.)

Relive high school as you slide down the lunch line at this tavola calda (cafeteria)—but replace day-old sloppy joes with authentic Italian fare. Primi €6-7.50. Secondi €4-7.50. Fresh fish F €6-8.   • Giacomini, V. Aventino 104-106 (☎06 57 43 645). B-Circo Massimo. South on V. Aventino from the Metro stop, past V. Licinia. Inside this alimentari, owner Claudio, certified Maestro Salumiere Gastronomio, prepares indescribably wonderful panini to order (€4-8) with the highest quality ingredients, as he has done for over 50 years. Wide selection of hand-picked meats and cheeses from only the best producers, priced by weight. Next door, his wife and daughter create similarly wonderful pizza. Black squares of foam hang just below the ceiling in the dining room, probably to dampen the cheers of patrons who have just tasted their food. Feast on spaghetti alla Felice (cherry tomatoes, basil, mint, oregano, thyme, marjoram, and ricotta; €10) in front of post-Impressionist paintings strung up in a line on the wall. Exposed ducts and casks balanced between rafters give this large restaurant the feel of a converted barn (in a good way). Watch the master fresh pasta artisans at work in the back, as they have been in this shop since 1947, as you select from a variety of their creations and marinated vegetables (priced per kg). Mastro Giorgio. Brightly colored gelateria appears like a low-quality chain, but has surprisingly delicious gelato at non-tourist-trap prices.   • Parinando, V. della Robbia 30 (☎06 57 50 674). B-Piramide. Turn left on V. Alessandro Volta off V. Marmorata and walk to the intersection with V. della Robbia. A variety of breads, pizzas, crostini, and ripiene (priced per kg) are prepared and baked in the large oven in the back. Calzones €3. Pastries €1-2.
