Time was, the strength of the dollar and relative weakness of Italy’s lira made boutique shopping in Rome a bargain-hunter’s dream. Now Italy’s in on the euro and the dollar has tanked, so those days of massive savings are past. Still, if you’re yearning to kill a couple credit cards with some shopping at Rome’s chicest boutiques, Via del Corso, Via dei Condotti, and the streets that surround them are lined with name-brand stores. More daring—and unique—shops can be found on Via del Governo Vecchio. Slightly less pricey stores can be found along Via Nazionale and around the Campo dei Fiori. Via Cola di Rienzo, near the Vatican, has most of the same stores as the Corso with far fewer shoppers. There is the Roman equivalent of a shopping mall (a few stores in a beautiful palazzo with a coffee bar) on the Corso across from P. Colonna: the Galleria Alberto Sordi (open daily 10am-10pm). Opening hours in July and August are much less reliable, with a number of shops closing on Saturday morning and reopening only on Tuesday. Most stores, though, will be open continuously, at least on weekdays. If you happen to spend over €155 at one store, you are eligible for a tax refund (see Essentials).
