PLAZA DE TOROS DE LA REAL MAESTRANZA. Bullfighting has been a staple of Sevillano culture for centuries, as evidenced by the city’s beautiful and world-renowned Plaza de Toros. Home to one of the two great bullfighting schools (the other is in Ronda), the plaza fills to capacity (13,800) for the 13 corridas of the Feria de Abril. Multilingual tours take visitors through a small museum, the chapel where matadores pray before fights, and the emergency room used when their prayers go unanswered—though only three matadors have died in the history of bullfighting in Sevilla. (☎954 224 577; www.realmaestranza.com. Open May-Oct. 9:30am-8pm; Nov.-Apr. 9:30am-7pm. Mandatory tours every 20min. in English and Spanish. €6; students and seniors €2. See Bullfighting, for ticket info.)
TORRE DEL ORO Y MUSEO NAVAL. The 12-sided Torre del Oro (Tower of Gold), built by the Almohads in the early 13th century, overlooks the river from Po. de Cristóbal Colón. Today, a tiny yellow dome is the only remnant of the golden tiles that once covered the tower. Inside is the small Museo Maritimo Naval, a storehouse of maritime antiquities. Museum officers enthusiastically tend to visitors. (☎954 222 419. Open Sept.-July Tu-F 10am-2pm, Sa-Su 11am-2pm. €2, students and seniors €1. Tu free.)
OTHER SIGHTS. The Torre de la Plata (Tower of Silver) was once connected to the Torre del Oro by underwater chains designed to protect the city from river-borne trespassers. With old-fashioned piracy no longer a concern, the Torre is now a bank. One block farther inland, between Pte. de Isabel II and Pte. de San Telmo, is the Iglesia de Santa Ana, Sevilla’s oldest church and the focal point of the fiestas that take over in July. (C. Pelay Correa. Open M and W 7:30-8:30pm.)
