Sevilla Flamenco

Sevilla would not be Sevilla without flamenco. Born of a gitano (gypsy) musical tradition, flamenco consists of dance, guitar, and songs characterized by spontaneity and passion. Rhythmic clapping, intricate fretwork on the guitar, throaty wailing, and rapid foot-tapping accompany the swirling dancers. Flamenco can be seen either in the touristy tablaos, where skilled professional dancers perform, or in tabernas, bars where locals dance Sevillanas. Both are good, but the tabernas tend to be free. In addition, the Museo del Baile Flamenco brings together a variety of top-notch performers for late-afternoon shows. The tourist office provides a complete list of flamenco venues; ask about student discounts.
