Madrid Gran Vía

  • Plaza de España, On a sunny day the Plaza de España is filled with street performers, vendors, sunbathers, and Spanish couples showcasing some serious PDA. In the middle of the plaza, look for the statues of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, and then head west to scope out the statue of celebrated wordsmith Cervantes. The western end of Gran Vía. Free. No wheelchair access. Has outdoor seating.
  • Telefónica Building, C. Gran Vía, 28 (☎01 055 50 22), Completed in 1920 by Ignacio de Cardena and over 1,000 workers, this building inspired by the work of American architect Lewis S. Weeks was the first skyscraper in Madrid and arguably the first in all of Europe. Used during the Spanish Civil War as a lookout by the Republicans, it was a target of many bombings and reportedly housed Ernest Hemingway on several occasions. Gran Vía. No wheelchair access. Has air conditioning.
