Ecotourism in Brazil is supervised by the Ministry of Tourism (www.embratur.gov.br), which began forming partnerships with private and nongovernmental organizations to collaboratively conserve Brazil’s natural heritage in the mid-1990s. Many areas of Brazilian nature reserves are open only to organized ecological travel or programs. However, as Brazil’s tourist influx has grown, the opportunities for ecotourism and travel centered on the vibrant, variegated environment of the country have likewise increased and been heralded as an alternative means of turning Brazil’s rainforests and wildernesses into a livelihood for its residents.
Many of the opportunities for engagement with the environmental are located in the Amazon region, but environmental tourism and volunteering is common all across the third-largest country in the Americas. Whether involving conservation or ecological experience and learning, all with varying degrees of guidance and commitment, Brazil may be one of the easiest places to get a taste of green travel.
