Cosmopolitan capital Belém (3 days) provides opportunity to experience everything from glitzy nightlife to colonial influence, at times in a strange Art Deco setting. Head north to Macapá (2 days), at the mouth of the Amazon, and learn about the region’s indigenous cultures and tour the tranquil waterfront on a zippy moto-taxi. Hop a plane to Santarém to get to Alter do Chão (2 days), then relax on the white sands of the best beach in the Amazon. Once your tan is satisfactory, fly into Manaus. Discover the rainforest on one of the many jungle trips (4 days) departing from Manaus. Marvel at the lush canopy and listen to the chatter of monkeys from your canoe. Press on to Rio Branco (2 days), deep in the interior. Immerse yourself in the history of the rubber industry and the area’s indigenous communities as you wander from museum to museum. Fly north to Tefé, which serves as a stepping stone to the Mamirauá Reserve (4 days). Take your camera to (legally) capture the region’s amazing wildlife, as you are guided through the forest surrounding the solar-powered lodge. Relax on a starlit nighttime canoe trip, and prepare to eat or be eaten as you fish for piranha.
