Travelers of all stripes have long found Chile a friendly country, and the environmentally minded visitor will find the same to hold true. Most ecotourism and conservation opportunities are concentrated either in the Andes mountains, where mineral and industrial development is in tension with the preservation of the arid mountain ecosphere, or Patagonia, where ecological preservation is but the latest struggle to shape the life of Chile’s southern frontier. Chile’s ecotourism industry and opportunities are fairly well connected to the Internet, and English is widely spoken, making the environmental experience more accessible than in many countries.
Most volunteering in Chile focuses on social issues, yet some opportunities can be found in the realms of ecological preservation and environmental work. Ecotourism is highly institutionalized and commercialized, however: while environmental expeditions in Chile may not be cheap, the problems of unreliability that plague ecotourism elsewhere are much less prevalent here.
